Crisis and response, by the numbers
The statistics on domestic violence and teen pregnancy tell a story of continuing crisis and unflagging effort by the YWCA to stand by the women and their children dealing with these wrenching issues.
- Every 15 seconds, a woman is beaten in America.
- More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
- Nearly half of all women (48.4%) in the U.S. have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
- Almost 50% of homeless women and their children fled their homes because of violence.
- The YWCA is the state’s largest provider of services to battered women.
- We’ve increased the average length of stay for women in our shelter from 3 weeks to 4 months.
- 5 out of 6 requests for shelter are denied because we’re at capacity.
- The teen pregnancy rate in the US is 86 out of 1,000 women. That’s the highest in the industrialized world.
- One 1 in 4 teen mothers completes high school.
- 75% of unmarried teenage mothers end up on welfare within 5 years of the birth of their first child.
- The suicide rate among teen mothers is 7 times higher than their peers’ rate.
- The YWCA has provided over 1,500 women and children with nonresidential counseling and treatment services each year.
- 200 teen moms and their babies receive shelter every year.
- On average, 90 young adults participate in our Workforce Development Program — and 90% obtain full-time employment.
