EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Benjamin Aviles

Nominated by Amanda Lemon, Assistant Director, DVSS

“The people who give you their food give you their heart.” – Cesar Chavez

Benjamin Aviles is serving up his heart on a plate. With an infectious smile and jovial personality, Ben seamlessly joined the YWCA staff in April 2024 as the Domestic Violence Shelter Services (DVSS) chef. “It takes a village to raise a child”, and Ben is more than willing to lend a hand and share his food.

A certified ServSafe Manager and Allergen, Ben handles cooking a hot lunch and dinner daily, meal planning, and prep, as well as, food inventory and purchasing for DVSS. “My goal is to make sure residents get healthy, nutritious meals in their daily routines and that these meals fit into our service plans,” said Ben. “During dinnertime, I keep an eye on residents and help them with their chores, using the right techniques to teach them independent living skills.” Additionally, Ben ensures that the kitchen and food areas are clean and tidy, including all the appliances, utensils, cookware, and dishes.

“Ben is consistent, dependable and takes his job seriously,” said Amanda Lemon, Assistant Director, DVSS. “The kitchen is in remarkable condition.  Last month, we had a surprise inspection and we passed with flying colors due to Ben’s regular efforts to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness in the kitchen.”

A quote shared by Ben by Rachel Ray, “If you’re humble and hardworking, opportunities will arise for you”, are not only wise words to live by, but also a sentiment that sheds light on Ben as a person, and the work he’s put in that’s led him to the YWCA of Western Massachusetts.

Even when he is not in the kitchen, Ben is not afraid to lend a hand when needed. “Ben is a serious asset to our DVSS team,” said Amanda. When needed Ben is always willing to help the Direct Service Advocates. Additionally, Ben was an integral part of the YWCA’s Community Day for clients and residents, providing delicious side dishes and accompaniments, as well as, assistance during clean up.

A proud Puerto Rican and Springfield native, Ben has not always been a chef. During high school, he worked as a Sunday School Teacher and Assistant Youth Leader at Templo Llego Jesus. “After finishing high school, I trained to become a certified automotive technician and worked for a bit as an Automotive Service Advisor and Lube Technician,” said Ben.

“I have also helped people with disabilities achieve independent living at home while working for Stavros,” he said. Furthermore, Ben has worked at the Mental Health Association. “I provided support for substance use recovery, developmental disabilities, and acquired brain injuries,” he said.

Having completed the MGM/HCC Culinary Program as a certified line cook, Ben is currently studying Hospitality Management at Holyoke Community College. Ben says he was drawn to the open cook position at the YWCA. “Prior to this, I worked as a cook at MGM Casino,” he said. “The experience I gained there, along with the certifications I earned and the ongoing education in Hospitality Management at Holyoke Community College, helped me develop my skills, which I’m excited to bring to this role.”
