EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Ilianys Robles
Nominated by Luis Santiago, Director of Adult Residential Programs

“A genuinely happy person is one who has rendered others happy.” – Daisaku Ikeda

Ilianys Robles radiates pure joy. A Direct Service Advocate for the Domestic Violence Shelter Services (DVSS), Ilianys is a friendly and welcoming presence for those who reside in the shelter.

“Since joining DVSS, Ilianys has consistently demonstrated exceptional kindness and a genuine love for all guests, especially children,” said Luis Santiago, Director of Adult Residential Programs.

Wise beyond her years, Ilianys started at the YWCA in July 2023. Currently, she is working towards a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Bay Path University. “I chose psychology because I wanted to make a change and be able to help people better understand and overcome mental health challenges while finding a way to improve their own mental health,” she said.

Direct Service Advocates for DVSS are responsible for making sure everything in the shelter is running smoothly, while providing guests with support as they work towards overcoming personal challenges and traumas.

Added Ilianys, “we make sure that when survivors come, they know that they are in a safe environment, and we provide them with support so they can feel safe and begin to heal and eventually transition to their own place with their families.”

Originally, from a small town in Puerto Rico, Ilianys moved to this area when she was 12 years old. She considers moving as one of the most significant challenges she has ever had to face. Moving “allowed me to face my fears and adapt to the many changes that came along— a different culture and language.”

Every day, Ilianys is walking in her purpose. The services and resources available for survivors of domestic violence have come a long way and Ilianys is eternally thankful.

“As the daughter of a domestic violence survivor who didn’t have access to half of the resources that are now thankfully available, I wanted to be able to provide support to survivors who make the brave decision to leave their abusive relationship and keep themselves and their families safe, which is a huge step,” she said.

Added Luis, “Ilianys’ dedication makes her an invaluable asset to both our team and, most importantly, the guests we serve at DVSS.”

“Beyond her warmth and compassion,” he concluded. “Ilianys has shown tremendous professional growth. She is a reliable team member who truly understands and supports our agency’s mission. She embraces feedback with a positive attitude and is always eager to learn.”

“I’m thankful for this nomination and for the opportunity to be a part of the YWCA,” said Ilianys. “It has been a fantastic experience. I have gained so much knowledge during my time here, and I’ve gotten the chance to meet so many amazing people, which has made it a great experience and work environment.”
